Sven-Goran Eriksson fires Steven Gerrard Rangers prediction as he responds to Scottish football 'rumours'

Former England boss Sven-Göran Eriksson is certain Steven Gerrard is the man to end Celtic's domestic dominance and deny them 10 In A Row.

The Rangers boss remains trophyless two years into his Ibrox rein but the former Three Lions boss sees no reason why the good times can't come back to Ibrox.

Gerrard's pursuit of next season's Premiership title is well under way after securing the capture of Ianis Hagi on a permanent deal from Genk.

And Eriksson believes it's his former key man's commitment to excellence that will be instrumental in denying Neil Lennon and Celtic their crowning achievement.

The 72-year-old, speaking to the Daily Mail, said: "I am very happy for him and he is doing great in my opinion.

"Of course, he will look at winning trophies as a next step. That will happen. He will be a success. I would take a big bet on that.

"Why? Because of his character and his knowledge of football. The Stevie Gerrard I remember didn’t speak very much. But when he did, people listened to him.

"He had that about him, whether it was in training or matches. That is a big thing if you want to be a manager.

"He is also a very serious and professional person. If he gets a job, he will not give 99 per cent to it. He would try and give 200 per cent if possible. And you can see that Rangers did very well in the Europa League."

The much-travelled Swede has enjoyed sojourns in China, Mexico and the Ivory coast but never experienced the crazy world of Scottish football during his career.

And Eriksson admits he has nothing but respect for the big two despite never receiving a formal approach to manage either Rangers or Celtic.

He added: "Rangers and Celtic are two huge clubs Not only in Scotland, they are huge internationally.

"Every country has these big powers. In Spain, Barcelona and Real Madrid, I experienced Benfica in Portugal and in Scotland you have these two.

"To coach one of these huge clubs is a great honour. It’s fantastic, but you need a strong personality. Stevie has that. I’m sure Rangers can get back and seriously challenge Celtic.’

"It was a fantastic challenge, a fantastic club and Scotland is a big football country.

"Have I ever had the chance to work there? Not really.

"There were some rumours many, many years ago, I think about Rangers, but I never had any contact with any Scottish club."
