Sven-Goran Eriksson declares interest in becoming next Scotland manager

Sven-Goran Eriksson has declared his interest in becoming the next manager of Scotland.

The 71-year-old former England boss has been out of work since leaving his role as Philippines manager in January.

It was reported by the Daily Record on Thursday that Eriksson had made contact with the SFA over the role, but the Swede denies there have been any talks.

But he did admit he would be interested in taking the job, which has been vacant since Alex McLeish was sacked earlier this month.

Eriksson told talkSPORT: "This is absolutely news to me. I never heard about it and I never thought about it.

“It comes out of the blue, so I have no idea, but of course I’m honoured. Scotland is a big job, it’s a huge football country.

“Would I speak about it? Yeah, why not. It’s not very polite if you don’t want to speak to people.

“But I haven’t thought at all about it. We’ll see if it’s happening, if there’s something behind it or not.”

When asked if he is keen for a return to the dugout, Sven added: "Yes absolutely.

“The passport is saying I am a certain age, but I don’t feel it. I still like to work, I love football.

“So if something interesting comes up I will go for it. If nothing happens, okay, that’s it. We’ll see.

“There are a lot of people still going at my age and doing well – Roy Hodgson is one of them. I don’t feel old and I’m healthy, so I hope to sit on the bench again one day.

“I haven’t followed Scottish football for some years. I’ve seen some games and know some players but I’m not a specialist on it in this moment, absolutely not.

“But if you take on any football job it’s a challenge, it’s a full-time job for sure, more than full-time.”

Eriksson was England boss between 2001 and 2006, overseeing quarter-final exits at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups and at Euro 2004.

He returned to management the following year at Manchester City and has also coached Leicester in the Premier League.

On the international stage, Eriksson has managed Mexico, the Ivory Coast and the Philippines as well as the Three Lions.
