Suzuki Motor Corp. has completely revamped its four-wheel drive minicar Jimny for the first time in 20 years. The fourth-generation Jimny minicar's look recalls the boxy design of the first model from the 1970s.
Released Thursday, the car is priced at the 1.45 million yen to 1.84 million yen level.
In 1998, the third-generation Jimny came on the market and it was designed for city driving, so it featured the roundishness that has proved popular in automobiles in recent years. The latest model is designed to emphasize that, despite its minicar status, the Jimny can perform well even on rough roads. It also has a number of safety features such as an automatic braking system.
Since the Jimny -- a blend of "jeep" and "mini" -- debuted in 1970, about 2.85 million units have been sold worldwide.
Suzuki has also released the Jimny Sierra, a slightly larger compact car priced at the 1.76 million yen to 2.01 million yen level.
