Suzuki Hybrids ready to hit the road

SUZUKI has launched its much more economical and better equipped Swift Sport, Vitara and S-Cross Hybrid models in the UK.

All three mild hybrids use the Japanese brand’s 1.4-litre Boosterjet petrol engine mated to a 48-volt system.

The new powertrain is said to cut CO2 levels by up to 17 per cent, provide a greater level of torque and improve the combined fuel economy by 17 per cent over the 1.4 manual variant it replaces.

The electrics set-up consists of a 48V lithium-ion battery, Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) and 48V-12V (DC/DC) converter to power components requiring lower voltage including lights, audio and air conditioning.

The Suzuki Vitara Hybrid (Suzuki)

The ISG acts as both a generator and starter motor, and assists the petrol engine during vehicle take-off for a higher level of torque, with 235Nm available from 2000rpm.

Suzuki has also brought in electric motor idling when the clutch is disengaged and the engine speed is about 1000rpm as a further fuel-efficiency aid.

This feature essentially replaces fuel injection, with power from the electric motor used to control and maintain engine idling at vehicle speeds below 50mph and until the automatic stop activates below 10mph.

All the Hybrid models feature a higher standard specification than before – including automated emergency braking across the range. Available to buy now, prices kick off at £21,570 for the Swift Sport, which is the only self-charging hybrid warm hatch model available among its competitors.

The popular Vitara compact SUV starts at £21,749 for an SZ4 version and tops out at £26,549 for an SZ5-spec model equipped with Suzuki’s intelligent four-wheel-drive ALLGRIP system. The S-Cross family crossover is available from £20,749 for the SZ4, rising to £27,549 for the SZ5 ALLGRIP.
