Suzanne Jackson urges tan lovers to stock up as new EU regulation to change everything

Suzanne Jackson is urging tan lovers to stock up as a new EU regulations set to change everything.

Jackson, owner of the brand SOSU has had to recreate her tanning products, which has proven “difficult” over the past few months because dark tan will be removed from shop shelves come April.

The Dublin native told her Instagram followers: “I hate having to have this conversation, because I thought this day would never come, but here we are…

“So in short, recently the EU decided to restrict the use of DHA to a maximum of 10 percent in cosmetics.

“So what that means is if you have anything more than 10 percent DHA in your products, you need to reformulate.

“DHA is the active ingredient in tan that gives your skin that deep colour. And obviously the darker you go with your tan, the more DHA is in the tan.

“And now that we’re only allowed to use 10 percent, most tanning brands are having to reformulate to include other ingredients like tan enhancers and things like that to make the tan as dark as it was before this regulation came in, which is proving difficult.

“But I’m sure we will get it over the line.

“Our Ultra Dark is nowhere near being what it was, so that’s disappointing, but I’m hoping as time moves on and more ingredients become available, we can eventually get that back to where it was.

“But from April 2022, it won’t be on the market. Ultra Dark in particular."

The 37-year-old explained that this new restriction has forced them to reformulate their tan and she warned tan lovers to stock up before the new regulations come into place in April.

She added: “Our stocks obviously are limited, but there is time between now and April to bag your favourite tan formulation, whatever brand that may be.

“All we have in the warehouse is all we’re going to have until the reformulation kicks in, which we’re nearly there with our Medium and Dark.

“We just need to get the Ultra Dark to where it was, which as I said is proving difficult. But I’m hoping that by the end of the summer we’ll have it.

“I just don’t know if we’re going to have it by April. But we’re definitely going to have our Medium and our Dark mousse, lotion and liquid.

“So if Ultra Dark is your fave, I would say stock up now. And the same applies for Bahama Body, and I’m sure other tan brands that you use.

“I’m vocalising this now so you can either stock up, or so you’re aware of these changes because you should be aware of these changes that are coming.

“So yeah Ultra Dark, if that’s your baby, I’d definitely be adding to your basket x10, because you’re probably not going to be able to get it till after the summer and it’s gonna be gone in April.”

Suzanne explained that she is worried that tanning products will never be the same again.

“It is what it is, we have to adhere to the rules and regulations, and that’s what we’re doing,” she continued.

“I can still promise you we’ll have an amazing tan brand on the market, I just personally don’t feel like it’s ever going to be the same again.

“But who knows! I’m just trying to give you guys the worst case scenario, and that is that tanning won’t be the same, but let’s hope it will.”

Meanwhile, Irish fake tan brands Bellamianta and Iconic Bronze have released an official statement regarding the new regulations.

Both brands have researched and reformulated their vast self-tanning product ranges over the last 18 months to meet the criteria of the new rules.

Brand Owner and Founder Linda Stinson said: “At Bellamianta and Iconic Bronze, we have taken this change in regulations as a stepping stone for both brands to move further onto our next passion project and something we have been working on in the background for years – Skincare.

“At Bellamianta, skincare has and will continue to be at the forefront of our products. All of our products are vegan, cruelty-free, PETA approved, alcohol-free, and free of all other GMOs, sulphates and toxins.”
