SUV torched in suspected arson attack

A blaze involving a Land Rover Freelander shortly after midnight today is believed to have been caused deliberately.

Firefighters were called to Camelot Way in Castlefields, Runcorn, at 12.48am, where the SUV was “well alight” with arson suspected. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) said the crew used the What3Words app to find the exact location.

The app provides a unique three-word phrase to represent a specific three-by-three-metre area, with the entire world divided into squares with the own unique references. It is intended to provide an easy way to identify a location with precision, and its developers say it is as accurate as the Global Positioning System.

Firefighters doused the flames with water and left the incident with the police.

A Cheshire Constabulary spokeswoman said: "At 1.08am on March 17 police were called to Camelot Way, Town Park, Runcorn following reports of a Land Rover Freelander on fire. The fire is believed to have been started deliberately and enquiries are under way."

Anyone with any information about the incident is urged to contact Cheshire Police online at cheshire.police.uk quoting IML 1224287., or call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

A CFRS spokesperson said: “Firefighters were called to a car which was well alight and Cheshire Police in attendance. To help quickly direct them to the incident officers used the app What3Words.

“Once in attendance they used two hose reels to extinguish the fire. This fire is believed to have been started deliberately so was left in the hands of Cheshire Police.”
