MINNEAPOLIS _ A motorist being pursued Monday morning in Minneapolis by the State Patrol veered into a playground near a grade school and hit two children among a group of kids, authorities said.
The driver, in an SUV, came to a halt after hitting a swing set outside Jenny Lind Elementary School. He ran from the scene but was quickly apprehended, according to emergency dispatch audio.
One trooper was trying to pull over the driver nearby on Interstate 94 for a traffic violation, when the SUV exited, the State Patrol said during a news conference from the scene.
After another trooper joined the pursuit, the vehicle drove through a tennis court, then plunged into sand and struck the school swing set, the patrol added.
A gun was recovered in the vehicle, the patrol added. A trooper loaded a stroller into the back of his vehicle.
There is no immediate word on the severity of the injuries to the children, who were taken to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale. Minneapolis schools ended classes for the year last week.
Two troopers were slightly hurt while apprehending the suspect, whose identity has yet to be disclosed.
The pursuit appears to have begun shortly after 9:35 a.m. and was prompted by the SUV speeding, according to the dispatch audio.
The SUV is registered at an address roughly two miles west of the school in Brooklyn Center.
The dispatcher said the same vehicle was pursued by law enforcement on Friday, but that pursuit was terminated before officers caught up with the driver.
