Burma's military junta recently announced the release of up to 9,000 prisoners from jails across the country in an apparent attempt to improve on the country's regional pariah status. But Ms Suu Kyi's unique position as the winner of elections since cancelled by the regime is keeping her imprisoned.
Her continued detention comes after the sacking of Burma's prime minister, Khin Nyunt, on October 19. A military intelligence general, he had long been a channel between the junta and Ms Suu Kyi.
