BANGKOK -- Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi has sent a letter of condolence to the wife of Satoshi Oyama over his death in the Kawasaki knife attack, according to the Myanmar State Counsellor's Office.

In a letter dated Wednesday, Suu Kyi mentioned Oyama's service as an interpreter when she visited Japan in April 2013. She wrote that his kind, friendly character made an impression on her.

She also wrote that Oyama's death is a major loss for diplomacy between Japan and Myanmar and that she expresses sincere condolences on behalf of many people in Myanmar.
