Sutton United 1-0 Leeds United: FA Cup – as it happened

An amazing day for Sutton United, who are in the hat for Monday’s FA Cup fifth-round draw after seeing off Leeds United at Gander Green Lane.

“It will sink in over the next day or two,” says Doswell. “We knew we would not be fazed by it and when we saw their starting lineup, we knew we had a great chance.”

Garry Monk’s not feeling quite so dandy after that defeat. “I take responsibility for this performance, I’m the one that selected the team and made a lot changes and it didn’t work out for us,” he says. “Our performance did not warrant the result, credit to Sutton and good luck to them in the next round. There was no cohesiveness to our play. We have to refocus and look at the bigger picture now.”

Thanks for your company, emails and tweets. Bye!

Sutton United manager Paul Doswell is being serenaded by his own supporters, as he discusses the victory. “It was always a question of whether we could nab the goal,” he says. “It’s a life-changer now, you hope and pray now that we might get a Manchester City or one of the big clubs. This club deserves that. Manchester City, United, Chelsea, I’ll take any of those big clubs [in the next round].”

Where to start? Sutton United will be in the pot for Monday’s FA Cup fifth-round draw after dumping Leeds out, thanks to Jamie Collins’s second-half penalty. They could have had more than just the one goal, too, with forwards Biamou and Deacon excellent again. Manchester United at home to Wigan Athletic cannot top that, can it?

“Anyone who says the magic of the Cup is dead needs to sit down,” tweets Matthew. “Heart in mouth right now; never even seen Sutton play before.” Indeed, an unbelievable performance and cup tie. That was ruddy brilliant.

Updated

Sutton United’s captain and hero today, Jamie Collins, has been speaking about an extraordinary day for the National League club. “When we saw the teamsheet, we thought we had a chance,” he says. “At home we fancy our chances against anyone and it’s a big upset, but we knew we could do it.”

Unbelievable, bonkers scenes at Gander Green Lane, with Sutton fans smashing the plastic advertising hoarding behind Collins as he speaks on the pitch.

And the Sutton United supporters charge on to the Gander Green Lane pitch. A thoroughly deserved win for the National League side, and Garry Monk, the Leeds manager goes straight across to Paul Doswell, the victorious Sutton manager, to congratulate him on reaching the FA Cup fifth round.

Full-time: Sutton United 1-0 Leeds United

After almost six minutes of added time, we have another Cup upset! A historic day for Sutton, who have played simply magnificently this afternoon. Garry Monk’s Championship side are out.

Updated

90+3 mins: If in doubt, get it out, is very much the motto now for Sutton, as Collins sends the ball crashing upfield. Traore then is urged to just send the ball away as far as he possibly can. Sutton earn free-kick after Sacko’s foul on Gomis and it’s almost job done for the National League side.

90+2 mins: Eastmond is being withdrawn after pulling up earlier, with what looks to be a hamstring injury. Baboye Traore, supposedly known as ‘Bad Boy’, is on for the closing stages.

Updated

90 mins: Antonsson, with what feels like his first contribution of the afternoon, picks the ball up but blazes over from 20 yards out. There will be four minutes of added time at Gander Green Lane. There really is what they call a carnival atmosphere ...

89 mins: One minute of normal time to play, as Sutton United edge closer to a historic win over Leeds. Still Sutton charge forward, intent on wrapping up the tie.

88 mins: Craig Eastmond latches onto Downer’s pass, and does superbly to juggle the ball away from Leeds before appearing to pull up after eventually running the ball out play. But Sutton have been unrelenting, and they pour forward once more, this time through Deacon, who finds Biamou but he shoots wide.

Updated

86 mins: Sutton’s previous two fourth round appearances saw them lose by a combined scoreline of 14-0. Today, they’ve puffed out their chests and played magnificently. Gomis now draws the foul from Coyle, who has had a pretty torrid afternoon at right-back for Leeds.

85 mins: Sutton have been absolutely briliant this afternoon. Leeds have not matched them in any department, as Biamou again gets the better of Denton down the right flank.

83 mins: Adam May, on loan from Portsmouth, whips in the resulting free-kick and Jamie Collins, the Sutton skipper who scored the second-half penalty here, connects with it but it’s always rising. Sutton are not content with just clinging on to that one-goal lead here and surely now are in the driving seat with the extra man too.

82 mins: Liam Cooper, the Leeds captain, is sent off! It goes from bad to worse for Monk, who picks up his second yellow card of the afternoon. Eastmond, a holding midfielder by trader, drives his team forward and Cooper trips the former Arsenal man. Stuart Attwell has no choice but to send Cooper for an early bath. Leeds are reducted to 10 men ...

Updated

80 mins: Ross Worner, the Sutton goalkeeper, takes an age to take his goal-kick before it eventually drops to Deacon, who lets fly with a speculative effort from distance, which forces Silvestri into action.

79 mins: Garry Monk looks very glum on the touchline. A picture tells a thousand words.

78 mins: Biamou is down on the deck once more, after a clash of heads with Leeds’s skipper, Liam Cooper. He receives attention, while Leeds attempt to psych themselves up for the final stages of this tie. Will Sutton United hold on?

77 mins: Leeds win a free-kick on the right, about 20 yards from goal, as Coyle fouls Biamou in a role reversal of the earlier penalty but it’s a poor effort from Grimes, who has had in truth struggled here.

Updated

74 mins: Roofe does well in the centre of the pitch, darting away from a couple of challenges before Grimes takes over. But the final ball is wasteful and Sutton win an unlikely corner, as the part-time side hassle the ball off of Sacko. Roarie Deacon has just taken about 10 minutes to get to the corner flag for the resulting corner-kick.

73 mins: Billy Whitehouse is the man to make way, with Roofe on for the 20-year-old, making his Leeds debut. Sutton look as though they are beginning to tire a little – unsurprisingly given their efforts here – as Deacon miscues his pass for Amankwaah.

71 mins: Kemar Roofe is readying himself to come on now by Garry Monk. Roofe helped Oxford knock out Swansea City in this very competition last year. Meanwhile, Wilks has just played in Grimes but the midfielder’s effort sails harmlessly wide. Something has to change for Leeds.

69 mins: Ronaldo is about to come on for Leeds. So is Vieira. That’s Ronaldo Vieira, the 18-year-old from Guinea-Bissau, who is quite the fans’ favourite at Elland Road. The all-energy midfielder has been brilliant in the Championship this season.

68 mins: Half-hearted handball appeals against Matt Grimes are dismissed by Stuart Attwell. Sutton are not, just yet anyway, to be awarded a second penalty this afternoon. They are all of 22 minutes away from sealing a spot in the FA Cup fifth round ...

66 mins: Alan Pardew has come along to the Sutton party this afternoon, wearing those thick-rim glasses of his. Meanwhile, on the pitch, Silvestri does well to slide the ball clear after a poor pass back by Denton.

64 mins: Malik Wilks, the 18-year-old striker, is on for Leeds at Gander Green Lane, replacing Souleymane Doukara, who contributed very little in all honesty. Just three days ago, Wilks’s brother, Raheem, was shot dead in Leeds.

Updated

62 mins: Billy Whitehouse is scythed down just outside the box but Stuart Attwell waves play on. Leeds supporters are enraged but Sutton just get back on with it, pressing Leeds high up the pitch.

60 mins: Eastmond drives forward towards the penalty area but Cooper eventually cuts the ball out. Sutton’s tails are up while Leeds’s are, er, down.

Updated

56 mins: Biamou has looked very bright for Sutton, as has Deacon. Those two have really proved double trouble for the Leeds defence. Can Sacko make an impact at Gander Green Lane? Sutton look very much in control, they just need to ensure they do not lose their heads.

Updated

54 mins: Simon Downer ushers Tyler Denton off the ball, much to the delight of the home supporters, as he wins Sutton a goal-kick. Meanwhile, Garry Monk is about to throw on Heidi Sacko, with Stuart Dallas the man to be replaced.

53 mins: That’s a thoroughly deserved goal and it’s captain fantastic Collins who slammed the ball home from the spot. Paul Doswell punches the air to celebrate in the home dugout.

So what happened for the penalty? Lewie Coyle fouled Biamou after a mix-up in the Leeds defence, with Silvestri denying Deacon once before Coyle brought down his man, and Stuart Attwell pointed to the spot.

GOAL! Sutton United 1-0 Leeds United (Collins pen, 53)

And Jamie Collins sends Silvestri the wrong way!

52 min: Penalty Sutton United !

50 mins: Leeds have an effort at goal, but Billy Whitehouses’s effort is deflected wide. The resulting corner-kicks comes to nothing, because, you’ve guessed it, Doukara is penalised for a foul inside the box.

49 mins: Leeds keep things nice and safe, with some sideways passing form left to right among the defenders. Antonsson has been totally anonymous. As has Doukara, barring the odd foul.

47 mins: Downer finds Amankwaah, but he runs it out of play. Leeds have the throw-in but the Sutton defender takes his time in giving it back, much to his amusement. Garry Monk is out on the touchline barking at his Leeds players. Meanwhile, Stuart Atwell asks Sutton’s Biamou to calm down.

Th second half is underway!

Sutton get things going again with a thumping ball towards Leeds left-back Tyler Denton.

“I think we’ve done very, very well and we’ve had five or six efforts on goal,” says Sutton manager Paul Doswell, as he walks back to the home dugout armed with a cup of tea. “We just need more of the same but at the moment we are doing alright.”

The second half will be underway in around six minutes time. To recap the first half, we’ve had a disallowed goal, a fingertip save by Marco Silvestri and plenty of wholehearted challenges. I’m looking at you, Craig Eastmond. If the next 45 minutes is as good as the first, then we might have another Cup upset in store ...

Updated

Some essential half-time reading, courtesy of Dominic Fifield:

Half-time: Sutton United 0-0 Leeds United

It’s been a great FA Cup tie so far, and the hosts will feel a little hard done by not to be in front. Roarie Deacon has been excellent, while Leeds have offered very little going forward, bar the odd Stuart Dallas foray towards goal.

Updated

44 mins: Gomis surges through behind the Leeds back line but he’s ruled offside. This time, it’s defenitely the right call against the Sutton forward but Deacon will head down the tunnel at half-time thinking he ought to have a goal to his name here, after his early strike was disallowed. There will be one minute of added time.

43 mins: Brilliant save from Silvestri, as Deacon lashes towards goal from just outside the box! Biamou nudges the ball to his right and Deacon lets fly, with it swerving all over the place and the Italian goalkeeper keeps it out. Eastmond then has it go but his effort, too, is steered clear.

42 mins: Spence sends in a rip-roaring long throw of sorts but Cooper climbs highest to clear. Leeds are having to soak up a lot of Sutton pressure towards the end of this pretty one-sided half.

40 mins: Denton charges down the right and it’s that man Roarie Deacon who is guilty of fouling the Leeds left-back. Sutton continue to look pretty comfortable, though. They are “currently doing a lot better than their last FA Cup fourth round match in 1989”, tweets Steven Pye.

37 mins: Dallas strikes at goal from just outside the box and his effort is deflected wide for a corner. Dallas has been Leeds’s only true outlet so far in this tie. Grimes takes it but Worner gobbles it up.

36 mins: Sutton in the ascendency once more, with Spence finding Biamou, who is back up on his feet. The ball then comes to Deacon, who wriggles away from two Leeds defenders before losing his footing.

“I fancy Sutton to make it a hat-trick of FA Cup upsets,” emails Alex Kraushaar. “First Millwall and Fulham, and Sutton are taking Leeds to task here.”

Updated

34 mins: Sutton United’s second-choice goalkeeper is 46-year-old Wayne Shaw ...

33 mins: A bit of head-tennis sees Biamou fall to the floor after a hefty challenge from Leeds youngster Paul McKay. The Sutton physio charges on, it doesn’t look too serious but Biamou is clearly pained.

32 mins: Roarie Deacon is causing Leeds all sorts of problems. Tyler Denton goes into the book after chopping Deacon down on the byline. Sutton had sprung from defence into attack, courtesy of Worner’s giant goal-kick. The ball comes in from the set-piece but it’s poor and Doukara heads away.

31 mins: Leeds win a corner ... Coyle does well after good work from Dallas, who is beginning to grow a little into this game. Grimes whips it in from the right but Collins heads clear.

Updated

28 mins: Leeds go straight up the other end and Dallas tests the Sutton goalkeeper Ross Worner, formerly of Charlton, but it does not cause him too much trouble.

27 mins: Sutton burst forward down the right but Amankwaah’s cross ends up going out for a goal-kick. It was a nice idea. They stride forward once again through Deacon – who looks really up for this – and he shoots low at goal before Gomis has a go too. Silvestri smothers but it’s one-way traffic at the moment.

25 mins: Silvestri is called into action with a cross-cum-shot causing a little danger but it’s fairly routine in the end. Leeds remain on the back foot, and James Beattie, the Leeds first-team coach, is frantically making notes inside the away dugout.

24 mins: Sutton manager Paul Doswell is a very superstitious man. His team travelled by coach from the nearby Holiday Inn, all of 90 seconds away. He also demanded his players had the same coach driver that took them to AFC Wimbledon in the last round. Magical.

23 min: When Doukara does get a glimpse of the round thing, he fouls Biamou. Sutton duly pump the ball forward.

22 min: Doukara drops into practically defence to pick the ball up, in desperate search of the ball that has so far totally evaded him. Leeds have shown absolutely nothing going forward at the moment and it all seems very static.

20 min: Sutton’s Jamie Collins, who once captained Havant and Waterlooville at Anfield eight years ago, screams no-nonsense centre-back. Meanwhile, Billy Whitehouse shoots but gets it all wrong. Sutton start over with a long goal-kick upfield.

19 min: Deacon whips it in, and it falls to Simon Downer right at the back stick. He does superbly to keep it in play and Gomis’s shot is eventually deflected wide for a corner. Deacon puts the ball in but Leeds clear. Sutton then win a throw-in deep inside the Leeds half before Downer is penalised.

Updated

18 min: Cooper is booked for Leeds. Eastmond attempts to play through Deacon and the Leeds defender is penalised for tugging the Sutton forward’s shirt. Sutton have a free-kick about 25 yards out ...

17 min: Leeds start another attack through Phillips, but the ball just keeps coming back at them. Meanwhile, the rain has got the better of BT Sport’s cameras at Gander Green Lane, with virtually the entire lens covered in water.

15 min: Whitehouse does well, nipping in between two Sutton midfielders and Bailey is pulled up for a foul. Leeds spread the ball wide to the left but Sutton again pick it back up. Antonsson and Doukara have seen very little of the ball so far here.

13 min: Garry Monk will not be too pleased with this start by his team. Sutton look much more comfortable, and dangerous, with Biamou going close and Deacon having a goal ruled out, perhaps unfairly.

12 min: Silvestri tips over brilliantly from Biamou and Sutton win a corner. Amankwaah and Deacon are in the box but the corner is cleared by McKay, but only for another corner. Amankwaah gets something on the second ball in but his effort is harmless and always rising.

Updated

10 min: Sutton pump a ball into the Leeds box and Collins causes a brief moment of panic but Leeds clear their lines. They have not truly settled just yet and Sutton pick up another free-kick after Doukara is penalised for a foul on Eastmond.

9 min: Coyle does well down the right for Leeds before Whitehouse attempts to spread the ball wide. Sutton, though, get back hold of it and it’s time for another huge goal-kick to come downfield.

7 min: A scare then for Leeds, who go back to basics with some tidy possession. Its chucking it down now but Sutton will not care an inch, with Deacon and co already grabbing hold of the tie. That early disallowed strike will surely breed confidence among the hosts.

6 min: Goaaaaaal ... but the flag is up! Roarie Deacon is through on goal after a big, long ball from Spence over the top and Deacon shoots beyond Silvestri but the flag is raised. Deacon wheels away to celebrate and takes a few seconds to realise it will not count. It’s an extremely tight offside call and looks a little unfair.

Updated

5 mins: Dallas is penalised for a high foot on Nicky Bailey and Sutton win a free-kick just inside their own half. Cooper clears the lofted ball before Sutton send it right back at them, with a thumping high ball. Both teams are beginning to feel the force of mother nature, with wind and rain hurtling around Gander Green Lane.

3 mins: A free-kick goes against Adam May, with Grimes again winning the foul. Leeds with some early possession, slowly getting a grip on proceedings.

2 mins: Grimes is caught late by Craig Eastmond and the referee, Stuart Atwell, has an early word. A crunching challenge, sure to be felt on this astroturf surface. “Let them know you’re there, let them you’re there,” surely the pre-match message from manager Paul Doswell.

We're off!

Leeds get things underway at Gander Green Lane, with Tyler Denton sending a searching ball upfield.

Paul Doswell, the Sutton manager, is all smiles. What an occasion for the hosts. Garry Monk looks like he means business too as he slides into the away dugout.

Sweet Caroline rings around Gander Green Lane, with kick-off imminent. There’s a few familiar faces in attendance too.

One-time Leeds striker Steve Morison has just given Millwall the lead against Premier League Watford. More here:

Some Leeds news, courtesy of those wonderful folks at Opta. Leeds have progressed from nine of their last 11 ties in the fourth round. Kick-off less than 10 minutes away now at Gander Green Lane.

Some Sutton context, courtesy of Matt Loten via email. “The excitement of another potential FA Cup giant killing is, as a Portsmouth fan, augmented by the fact that 19 year-old Adam May, on loan at Sutton until the end of the season, starts in midfield,” he writes.

“He’s certainly one of the brighter prospects of a youth system which has been producing real talent for a change, and was instrumental as our lads came ran Manchester City very close in the FA Youth Cup third round last season. Tidy on the ball, a good passer, and has scored twice for Sutton in their two recent FA Trophy ties against Worthing, including a 102nd-minute winner in midweek.”

Garry Monk’s been chatting pre-match about those 10 changes. “We have another game in a couple of days time so I have to get the balance right to make sure we’re competitive in both,” he says. “We have faced this situation quite a few times already this season – against Fleetwood, Luton and Cambridge in the last round.”

Danny Mills, pitchside on punditry duties, reveals Leeds trained on an artificial pitch at their Thorp Arch training ground on Saturday, chucking the academy lads off it in order to get their preparations spot on. There’s a sell-out crowd athis afternoon, with just over 5,000 expected to cram into Gander Green Lane.

“It was calm for us, and unusually all of us slept in a hotel overnight,” Paul Doswell, the Sutton manager, says pre-match of his team’s preparations. “I think we were all in bed by 10.30pm and watching Match of the Day.”

“When I first came here it was a team in dire straits really, I was desperate to get this club going and in nine years that’s what we’ve been able to do,” Doswell says, who paid for the club to install their artificial pitch. “We train twice a week, we give them Frosties and we give them lunch as well.”

Sounds good, eh?

Here’s the official teamsheet from Gander Green Lane, where Sutton have just the 23 mascots. If that’s not magic of the Cup, I don’t know what is.

Want to re-live how Sutton beat AFC Wimbledon in the last round? Look no further with this lovely gallery ...

The 20-year-old Billy Whitehouse makes his Leeds debut then, and there’s also a place in the starting lineup for Paul McKay. It’s wholesale changes for the visitors, with Garry Monk making 10 changes from the win over Nottingham Forest in midweek.

Roarie Deacon, who has scored in every round to date, starts for Sutton, nicknamed the Ambers and Chocolates, supposedly. Nicky Bailey, formerly of Middlesbrough, Charlton and Millwall, also starts in midfield.

The teams!

Sutton United: Worner, Amankwaah, Collins, Gomis, May, Eastmond, Bailey, Spence, Deacon, Biamou, Downer

Leeds United: Silvestri, Coyle, McKay, Cooper, Denton, Grimes, Phillips, Whitehouse, Dallas, Doukara, Antonsson

Leeds are out on the pitch and stretching their legs after trudging off the team bus. Kemar Roofe and Matt Grimes are among them, but there’s no Chris Wood, Pontus Jansson or Kyle Bartley. Malik Wilks, whose brother, Raheem, was shot dead earlier this week, is part of Garry Monk’s travelling squad. The official teams are not out just yet.

“It’s never easy, it’s very new, it’s very fresh and I’ve spoken to Malik and we keep those discussions internal,” Monk said at his pre-match press conference. “Our focus is on Malik and giving him whatever he needs, and as a club we care about him and we will do right by him. His attitude is that the football is going to help and credit to him. If that’s going to happen, that’s what we are going to do.”

Preamble

We are in to day three of the FA Cup fourth round, and Leeds United are in town, at Sutton United. The National League side will have taken inspiration from non-league Lincoln City, who knocked out Brighton and Hove Albion yesterday. Sutton, who got the better of AFC Wimbledon at Gander Green Lane in the last round, host Leeds on that 3G pitch of theirs.

There’s a few familiar faces on show, notably former Arsenal man Craig Eastmond and non-league scoring sensation, Matt Tubbs. Then there’s Nicky Bailey and Kevin Amankwaah, with 100s of Football League appearances between them.

It will be interesting how Leeds treat the tie, with Garry Monk’s side flying high in the Championship. Like Brighton, they may well have the bigger picture in mind. On the flipside, what better way to build momentum than a jolly good Cup run.

Team news will be coming up shortly.

Kick-off: 2pm GMT
