A man has died in hospital days after huge fire ripped through his house in a quiet south London street.

Neighbours had managed to drag the man from the burning building through a kitchen window after the fire took hold in Sydney Street, Sutton, at about 7pm on October 17.

He later died in hospital, the London Fire Brigade said.

It is thought the man, whose age is not known, lived alone following the recent death of his mother.

One neighbour said: "He was pulled out of the kitchen window because they couldn't break the front door down.

"The fire brigade told them if they had gone through the front door they would've been greeted by a huge fireball which would have sent them flying through the air."

It took 25 firefighters two hours to get the blaze under control.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “ The ground floor of the end of terrace house was destroyed by the fire and most of the first floor was damaged.

“One man was taken to hospital, where he sadly later died.

"Another two men were treated on scene for smoke inhalation by London Ambulance Service crews.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
