Sutton-in-Ashfield Christmas festival cancelled amid extreme weather warnings

A Nottinghamshire Christmas festival has been cancelled as Storm Arwen is set to bring strong winds and snow to the UK.

The event in Sutton-in-Ashfield was due to take place on Saturday, November 27, the same day a Met Office yellow weather warning is in place for Notts.

Ashfield District Council has now announced it will be calling off the festival "for the safety of the public and the event staff".

Councillor Jason Zadrozny, Leader of Ashfield District Council, said: “With winds of up to 45mph forecast for the East Midlands we have had to take the difficult decision to cancel Sutton Christmas Festival.

"We know how popular our Christmas Festivals are and how many of you were looking forward to it, but the safety of residents and staff is our main priority.”

The Kirkby Christmas Festival today (Friday) is still going ahead as planned on Kirkby Plaza, with the lights set to be switched on at 7.15pm.

Councillor Zadrozny added: “We are hopeful that we can reschedule the event for early December and will keep residents informed of a new date.

"It is disappointing for all of us that the festival can’t go ahead, but unfortunately one thing we don’t have control over is the weather.

"I can assure you we will be bringing Christmas to Sutton, just a little later than planned.”
