Sutherland in rare air with second straight top gong

Annabel Sutherland has rubber-stamped her status as Australian cricket's latest generational talent, joining rarefied air with back-to-back Belinda Clark Awards.

Sutherland was on Sunday declared Australia's best women's player of the past 12 months, becoming just the fifth person to win the award in consecutive years.

The Victorian's accolade comes after a 12-month period where she took 27 wickets at an average of 15.63 across all formats, while scoring 250 runs at 41.66.

The allrounder polled 77 points, narrowly narrowly beating out Beth Mooney (74) for the top gong. Alana King finished third on 55 points.

Sutherland also claimed ODI player of the year honours, while Mooney edged out Georgia Voll to be crowned Australia's best T20 player on countback.

In doing so, Sutherland joined Karen Rolton, Shelley Nitschke, Lisa Sthalekar and Meg Lanning as women to be judged the team's best in two consecutive years.

"It's pretty special to be alongside a few of those names," Sutherland said.

"It's very surreal at the moment."

At age 24, Sutherland's trajectory is most similar to that of Victorian teammate Lanning.

The megastar was 23 when she won her second consecutive Belinda Clark Award in 2015, partway through her decade-long domination of the women's game.

Sutherland does not believe she is quite at that level yet, even with a Test double century already among the six international hundreds already to her name,

But regardless, the allrounder already looms as one of Australian cricket's household names for the next era.

"It's pretty hard to compare to (Meg)," Sutherland said.

"She's an absolute superstar and if I could be half as good as what she's done for the game, then I'd be pretty stoked.

"But it's been really cool, especially as a Victorian, to be able to play alongside her, play under her when she's been captaining and learn from how she goes about it."

Like Lanning, who became Australian captain at age 21, Sutherland was considered by some as a potential option to take over on Alyssa Healy's retirement this summer.

But she was not interviewed for the position, with Sophie Molineux instead edging out vice-captains Ashleigh Gardner and Tahlia McGrath for the top job.

"I didn't put much thought into it at all," Sutherland said.

"I'm just really happy to see so far Soph, Ash and T-Mac recognised as official leaders amongst the group.

"We're lucky that we've got leaders all throughout the squad that can play a role."

Sutherland's award came while in Australian camp ahead of the multi-format series against India, with no gala function this year.

Given the busy schedules, the Allan Border Medal and main men's awards will also be done without an awards night later in the year.
