Suthep: New party 'not a PDRC clone'

Suthep 'Kamnan' Thaugsuban, ex-deputy prime minister, Democrat Party powerhouse and Bangkok Shutdown leader, says the new political party is being organised by his younger brother Thani, but he may become leader 'if people want it'. (File photo)

Street protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban on Monday dismissed rumours about a new party being formed with the same name as the defunct People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), saying the PDRC's mission has long been completed.

Saying it was the independent idea of his younger brother Thani to set up a new party, but with a different name, he said he couldn't say exactly at this stage if he would join it and what role he would take. But if the "people" clearly announce their intention to form a new party and make it a real party of the people, he will join the movement and support it using his experience of more than 40 years in politics, he said.

Mr Suthep reiterated he personally supports Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha to continue serving as prime minister. "Personally, I still trust Gen Prayut in the job and hope he will be able to resolve the country's problems for the betterment of the people," said Mr Suthep.
