'Suspicious package' turns out to be burst bag of herbicide

Initial reports of a suspected bomb led to a large emergency services response in Wirral.

Police and firefighters were called to Hoylake Road, Moreton, at around 3.30pm on Wednesday after a black bag was reported as a suspicious package.

Road closures around the scene, close to the Tesco Express store, were put in place by Merseyside Police.

But Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service discovered it was actually a burst bag of herbicide.

Crews confirmed the chemical spillage had been caused by a vehicle driving over the container of herbicide, causing it to spill across the roadway.

Firefighters applied an absorbent called "Sphag Sorb" to the affected road to soak up the liquid.

One person was assessed at the scene by North West Ambulance Service but did not require any further treatment.

Fire crews left the scene at 6.53pm.
