Suspicious package found outside Edinburgh city centre gallery as Princes Street sealed off

A suspicious object has been found outside an art gallery in Edinburgh city centre, with a major police presence in the area.

Bomb disposal units were called to the Scottish National Gallery on The Mound, and the surrounding area was cordoned off by emergency services.

Princes Street was closed to traffic and pedestrians between Hanover Street and Frederick Street, with the gallery and some shops being evacuated.

Video footage shared online showed a bomb disposal unit on Princes Street, while a number of police cars could be seen lined up along nearby Hanover Street.

The bomb disposal van was parked at a bus stop near the gallery and a remote controlled device could be seen in use.

A Gallery spokesperson said: “Earlier today (Monday 20 Sept) a suspicious object was found outside the Scottish National Gallery. Police Scotland were notified and as a precaution the Gallery was evacuated to ensure everyone’s safety while this matter is looked into. We hope to reopen as normal tomorrow morning (Tuesday 21 September)."

Police say the device was examined and after deemed to be safe all surrounding roads will be reopened.

A spokesperson said: "Around 1.40pm police received a report of a suspicious package found at a building on the Mound, Edinburgh.

“Emergency services attended, the building was evacuated and a cordon put in place."

A number of Lothian Buses services were also diverted away from sections of the city centre due to the incident.
