WASHINGTON _ A Capitol Police explosive ordnance team was dispatched Wednesday afternoon to investigate a suspicious package near Union Station on the Senate side of Capitol Hill.
The investigation began around 2:15 p.m. in a parking lot across from the building that houses Fox News, NBC News and C-SPAN. Staff were warned to stay away from the area.
Capitol Police closed roads around the investigation, including E Street Northeast from Massachusetts Avenue Northeast to New Jersey Avenue Northwest, and North Capitol Street from Louisiana Avenue Northwest to Massachusetts Avenue Northwest.
Workers in the surrounding office buildings had the best vantage point to see the investigation, including C-SPAN staff.
Capitol Police investigates numerous suspicious package incidents, sometimes multiple per day. Items that fit the description of suspicious package can range from abandoned backpacks to wrapped boxes. Officials are on alert following last week's string of suspicious packages sent to prominent Democrats that contained improvised explosive devices.
