Suspicious items found outside church to be forensically examined

Suspicious items found outside a church in Tameside will be forensically examined by experts.

The bomb disposal unit were called as a precaution following the discovery at Holy Trinity Church in Ashton-under-Lyne on Thursday.

They found there was no immediate threat posed to the public following the Dean Street incident.

No one was injured and enquiries are ongoing.

In a statement, GMP said: "At around 1.40pm on Thursday 7 January 2021, police were called to reports that suspicious items had been found outside a church on Dean Street in Ashton-under-Lyne.

"Bomb disposal officers were called as a precaution and found that there was no immediate threat posed to the public.

"The items were taken away for forensic examination and those enquiries are ongoing."
