'Suspicious item' which led to evacuation in Ashington turns out to be a piece of metal

A 'suspicious item' which led to an evacuation in Ashington has been identified as a piece of metal.

Shortly before 3pm on Friday, Northumbria Police received a report of a suspicious item near Wansbeck Square, in Ashington. A number of nearby premises were evacuated and a police cordon was put in place while officers carried out enquires.

The item was later confirmed as a piece of metal, and the response stood down.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly before 3pm on Friday (September 23) Police received a report of a suspicious item in Ashington, near Wansbeck Square.

"As a precaution, a cordon was put in place and a number of premises evacuated while enquires were carried out. The item was later confirmed as a piece of metal, and the response stood down.

"The report was made in good faith and we'd always ask people to get in touch to report anything suspicious."
