'Suspicious' cyclist led police to cocaine and cash bust

A cyclist who was seen 'acting suspiciously' led to the discovery of drugs and two arrests being made.

Officers spotted a man acting suspiciously in Beckwith Street in Birkenhead at around 8.05pm yesterday.

After signalling for him to stop, he attempted to escape officers until he was caught by another patrol nearby.

Following a search, police found cannabis and a man was detained by police.

A further search of an address in Wirral found suspected cocaine, cannabis, drugs paraphernalia and a large quantity of cash.

An 18-year-old man and 46-year-old man, both from Birkenhead, were arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a Class B drug (cannabis) and possessing criminal property.

The 18-year-old was further arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting possession of a Class A drug (cocaine), and the 46-year-old on suspicion of obstructing an officer in the execution of their duty.

Both men were taken into custody for questioning.

Detective Inspector Emma Kerrigan said: “Two arrests have been made and drugs and cash seized thanks to the vigilance of our officers on proactive patrols in Birkenhead, and the public who told us it was an area that had caused them concern.

"Our officers patrol the streets of Merseyside 365 days a year to protect the public from those people who bring threats, violence and intimidation to the streets in their attempts to sell illegal drugs.

“I hope these arrests provide a very clear message to other criminals that your actions will not be tolerated here in Merseyside. We will take action and you will be arrested and face being put before the courts."

Detective Inspector Kerrigan asked the public to contact police if they believe drug dealing is taking place in their area in order for them to bring offenders to justice and "stop drug dealers profiting from misery and exploitation of vulnerable people".
