Newcastle Rugby League's match review committee has endured one of it's busiest weeks in 2026.
Five suspensions were handed down from eight charges out of round 14, while another player's season is already over despite a pending judiciary hearing.
South Newcastle forward Jack Welsh was hit hardest with two separate incidents resulting in a combined two-match ban, leaving him sidelined until NEWRL finals.
Welsh ended up being pinged for a crusher tackle and hip drop out of a 10-4 Sleapy's Day loss to minor premiers Maitland at Townson Oval last weekend.
Both were listed as first offences, twice opting to enter early guilty pleas for grade one charges and cop sole games on each occasion.
He will now miss the last two rounds of the regular season for the second-placed Lions, who visit the Northern Hawks (August 1) and wooden spooners Macquarie (August 8) on the run home.
It means Welsh becomes available again the weekend of August 15-16, with Souths still hoping to host a qualifying semi first up in play-offs despite suffering three straight defeats.
The Lions (18 points), who opened this campaign with a nine-match unbeaten streak (7 wins, 2 draws), sit eight behind leaders Maitland (26) and two in front of nearest rivals Kurri Kurri (16).
Central Newcastle (14) and Lakes (13) complete the current top five with Western Suburbs, The Entrance and Northern Hawks (12) all tied just outside the cut mark.
There were contrasting disciplinary fortunes for one of two key catch-up fixtures this weekend - Connor Kirkwood from The Entrance ruled out with suspension while Cessnock's Reed Hugo escaped with a warning.
Both forwards were charged with grade one dangerous contact - Kirkwood's listed as a second offence and captain Hugo free to play.
The ninth-ranked Goannas (9), grand finalists last year, host The Entrance at Cessnock Sportsground on Saturday unable to afford any more slip-ups on a desperate race to the finish line.
Kirkwood will instead be eyeing off a return for the Tigers against Macquarie at EDSACC Oval on August 2.

Montgomery's charge was rated highest at grade two while Kelly's was listed as a second offence.
The next full round sees Kurri home to Wests, Northern welcoming Souths and Macquarie away to The Entrance.
Lakes marquee Izaac Thompson (dangerous contact) escaped with a warning this week, which means the former NRL outside back will be free to line-up on August 1 when the Seagulls visit Central.
Maitland v Cessnock marks the remaining round-15 fixture.
Macquarie's Treigh Stewart, who has re-signed for 2027, won't take to the field again this campaign regardless of any outcome from a NEWRL judiciary hearing.
The Scorpions fullback has yet to front the panel for contrary conduct from round 13, opting to fight the charge in an attempt to have it downgraded.
Notching up his third offence this year, having been hit with shoulder charges twice previously, Stewart faced four games out with an early guilty plea.
The Toronto-based club are hoping to state their case and reduce the punishment to three games and avoid any suspension carrying over to next season.
