Suspended student sues UQ heads for $3.5m for defamation, breach of contract

Suspended University of Queensland student Drew Pavlou says he is suing the university, its chancellor and vice-chancellor for $3.5 million.

Mr Pavlou filed the claim in the Supreme Court of Queensland on Thursday for damages relating to a breach of contract and defamation.

The 21-year-old was suspended by the university's disciplinary board late last month when the university alleged he had breached its code of conduct.

Mr Pavlou drew widespread attention after he organised anti-Chinese Government protests on campus — one of which ended in violence.

The philosophy student is appealing his suspension.

In a statement, a University of Queensland spokesperson said it would consider the formal notice of claim when it is received.

"When we receive a formal notice of claim we will consider it and respond through the appropriate channels."

Mr Pavlou told his Twitter followers he was "seeking damages for breach of contract, negligence, defamation, deceit and conspiracy".

"It's not about money, it's about sending a message — a message they understand," he wrote.

Mr Pavlou has previously posted told social media followers he has sought police protection for his family after he received death threats from "supporters of the Chinese Government".

In an earlier tweet, Mr Pavlou said "we are trying to protect the right to free speech on Australian campuses".

The student has withdrawn from courses this semester.
