Suspended receiver Ahmir Mitchell leaving Michigan

Suspended receiver Ahmir Mitchell apparently is leaving the Michigan football program.

Mitchell, a freshman from Egg Harbor City, N.J., was one of two players suspended by coach Jim Harbaugh entering fall camp. He announced his departure with a statement on Twitter Wednesday.

"I will like to announce that I am hearby reopening my recruitment to all Universities and football programs," Mitchell wrote.

The U-M program does not confirm departures.

Mitchell wasn't in Ann Arbor long. He enrolled for the winter semester in January and was introduced at the Signing of the Stars event, but he was not in the team photo Aug. 7. When asked about it nearly two weeks later, Harbaugh said two of the three missing players were suspended _ later determined to be Mitchell and redshirt freshman defensive end Shelton Johnson.

Since the suspension, Mitchell has been active on Snapchat, showing himself cleaning floors at night at a building he said was in Livonia, Mich. It's unclear whether that was related to his Michigan suspension.

By making the decision now, Mitchell can enroll at another school in time for this season. Though he couldn't play at an FBS school, per transfer rules, this could count as a redshirt season. He might be able to play immediately at an FCS school or a lower division.

Mitchell was a four-star prospect, ranked as the No. 167 overall player in the recruiting class of 2016.
