Suspected World War II shell found underground at Nottinghamshire building site

A cordon has been set up after Nottinghamshire Police received a report of a suspected explosive device.

Officers were called to London Road in Balderton, Newark, just after 9.15am on Thursday October 8 to a report of a suspected Second World War shell found underground at a building site.

The force said it is now taking specialist advice.

Inspector Steve O’Connell, who is overseeing the incident, said: “We always treat these calls with the utmost caution to ensure the safety of everyone in the area.

“A specialist team is on the way to look at the device and decide on the next steps. I would like to thank the local community for their patience while we work to bring this incident to a safe conclusion.”
