Suspected suspicious briefcase causes false alarm at Newcastle business park

An unattended briefcase sparked an emergency service response at a Newcastle business park on Thursday.

Police were alerted to the suspected suspicious package shortly after 9.30am but it was quickly discovered to be a false alarm.

Officers had been deployed to the scene in Great Park, Gosforth , but were stood down.

Witnesses said the incident occurred at the Linden Homes North East offices on Esh Plaza.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At about 9.35am this morning [Thursday] we received a report of a suspicious briefcase that had been left unattended on a construction site in Great Park.

"Officers were deployed to the scene but we received a call a short time later to say that the briefcase had been left there by accident and was no longer believed to be suspicious.

"The call was made in good faith and we would encourage anyone concerned about suspicious activity, or a suspicious package, to contact police."
