Suspected 'stolen car' driver named after two cyclists killed in crash

A man is due in court today charged with killing two cyclists and injuring another woman by driving dangerously in an allegedly stolen car.

Colin Smith, 22, is accused of driving the Ford Fiesta ST Turbo in Dunlop Road, Speke, on February 28 last year when he collided with another vehicle and the cyclists.

Clare Killey, 45, from Childwall, was killed at the scene while 39-year-old Anthony Cope, from Halewood, fought for life for another three weeks before dying on March 18.

Smith, who has addresses listed in Lower Road, Halewood, and Lavender Gardens in Bewsey, Warrington, now faces two charges of causing death by dangerous driving and one of causing serious injury by dangerous driving to a Katy Nicholson.

He is also charged with receiving stolen goods, referring to the Ford Fiesta, between April 29, 2018, and the date of the crash.

Smith also faces four charges of fraud relating to obtaining insurance for the vehicle by allegedly telling insurance companies he was in legal possession of the car.

He is due to make a first appearance in Liverpool Magistrates' Court this morning.

The family of Mr Cope, known as Tony, paid tribute at the time of his death.

They said: "Tony is the most amazing dad, partner, son, brother and friend. He loves cycling and carp fishing and has always enjoyed being active.

“We are completely devastated by what has happened and ask for privacy at this time.”

After Ms Killey's death around 50 cyclists formed a solemn procession behind her funeral cortege as devastated friends and family said goodbye to her.

The words "wife", "sister" and "mum" were intricately spelt out in white flowers in her hearse with the initials Q.O.M - Queen of the Mountains - referenced among the tributes.

Reverend Tim Meadows, who read the Psalm bible reading and led the prayers, told those in church: "We will remember Clare as Queen of the Mountains for her courage, determination and captivating joy."
