Suspected stolen car catches fire after crashing into a garden fence in north Manchester

Police are investigating after a suspected stolen car caught fire after crashing into a garden fence in north Manchester.

The Vauxhall Corsa caught fire on waste land off Hillier Street North in Harpurhey on Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 7.49pm.

Pictures from the scene show smoke billowing from the car.

Firefighters from Blackley spent about 10 minutes extinguishing the blaze before handing over the scene to Greater Manchester police.

A witness said the car appeared to have been stolen and was 'rammed' into the fence before being set alight.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "A 7.49pm we received the first of several calls reporting a vehicle on fire on waste land adjacent to Hillier Street North in north Manchester.

"We sent one fire engine from Blackley and handed the scene over to Greater Manchester Police within 10 minutes."
