Bomb squad called to Clifton Downs - this is what happened

A suspected Second World War device was detonated in a controlled explosion on Clifton Downs.

Police and a bomb disposal unit were called after workmen found the explosive in a garden in Bromley Road in Bishopston yesterday.

Then, a member of the public informed Bristol Live that they saw the police and bomb disposal squad carry out a controlled explosion at Clifton Downs.

The device was covered in 'black bags' before the explosion, they said.

They said: "By Ladies Mile, surrounded by police and people in army uniform. A suspicious package on the grass."
