Suspected robber in court accused of targeting takeaways in Newcastle and Wallsend

A suspected robber has appeared in court accused of targeting takeaways in Newcastle and North Tyneside.

Jamie Brown allegedly struck at Subway, on High Street West, in Wallsend, and Japanese restaurant, Shijo, in the Haymarket, in Newcastle City Centre, on the same day.

A court heard that the 32-year-old attempted to rob an employee of cash at the sandwich shop before robbing a worker of money at the restaurant soon after.

Brown, of Canterbury Street, in Walker, Newcastle, appeared in the dock in custody on Tuesday, where he spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

Because of the seriousness of the two charges he faced - attempted robbery and robbery - no pleas were taken to either.

Prosecutor, Ben Woodward, said Brown allegedly targeted the eateries on Sunday, February 28, this year.

"This case involves one offence of robbery and one of attempted robbery," Mr Woodward continued. "The defendant has allegedly gone into a business in Wallsend then a Japanese restaurant in the Haymarkt and demanded money."

North Tyneside Magistrates' Court heard that, although leaving empty-handed from Subway, Brown allegedly stole money and tablets, worth £200 from Shijo.

Paul Dunn, defending, said Brown would not be applying for bail.

Sending Brown to Newcastle Crown Court and remanding him in custody, chairing magistrate Dr Vivien Hollyoaks said: "These charges are not charges we can deal with in the magistrates' court.

"So, this has to go to the crown court. You will next appear there on March 30 at 10am but you might be contacted by the crown court to alter that date."
