Suspected pollution sees two popular swimming spots in Dublin off limits

Local Authorities have warned the public to avoid the water at two popular beach locations in Dublin as a result of pollution.

The first warning is in place for Sandymount Strand and is expected to last until September 24 at least.

This beach is a 2 km sandy beach with a gradual slope, which makes the water too shallow for any actual swimming, but is frequented by the public and so the warning is in place.

Bathing is temporarily prohibited because the “water quality has deteriorated due to suspected impacts from animals/birds.”

The second Dublin beach is Dollymount Strand, and another warning is in place here until September 23.

All activities that are usually available including swimming, kite flying, rowing, and canoeing should be avoided as the water is potentially polluted for the same reason as above - water quality deteriorated due to suspected impacts from animals/birds.

Other beaches in Dublin where people are asked not to enter the water are Merrion Strand and Balbriggan, Front Strand Beach where permanent restrictions are in place.

The reason for this restriction is because both were classified as having poor water quality following the 2020 bathing season.

The public is reminded to check on the status of any temporary swimming bans before returning, as oftentimes they’re extended.
