Suspected killer John Mangan led armed gardai on 50-minute chase before arrest

A suspected gangland killer who fled an open prison last month was arrested on Tuesday after leading gardai on a 50-minute chase.

John Mangan, who disappeared from Loughan House in Cavan on October 4, was lifted in Castleknock, West Dublin, reports the Irish Mirror.

The thug was spotted by cops on the Long Mile road driving a high-powered blue Honda CBR1100 bike on Tuesday afternoon.

As gardai attempted to stop Mangan, he sped off and he was pursued to Park West in Lucan, Clonee, Westmanstown, before he was finally apprehended.

Detectives from Blanchardstown Garda station made the arrest and brought him into custody.

A number of Armed Support Units were involved in the chase because of danger the hood was posing.

A source said: "This is a huge arrest. He is a very dangerous and volatile criminal as his background shows.

"But he also posed a great danger to the public in the chase and it was serious work by the gardai getting him."

There had been sightings of Mangan in the city centre earlier yesterday.

The gangster will be brought to Mountjoy Prison before being transferred to Portlaoise, losing open jail privileges.

This move was already going to happen as he was caught with an unauthorised phone after officers searched his cell at the Cavan facility.

Mangan was caged for 14 years in 2009 for drugs and firearms crimes. He also has convictions for public order and road traffic offences.

The 53-year-old, from Blanchardstown, was once named in court as having allegedly been involved in murdering drugs boss Martin "Marlo" Hyland and innocent Anthony Campbell.

In 2006, he and close associate William Hynes - both key figures of the Hyland gang - were caught with €2million of cannabis.

The resin was found by gardai in 14 boxes split between a Ford Transit van and an Opel Astra in the car park of Brown's Barn on July 31.

Mangan had been caught with a €300,000 cannabis haul a few months previously.

That bust led to mayhem and the murder of Hyland after mobsters suspected he was an informer.

Mangan was linked to the murder but never charged.
