Suspected grenade found in canal in Rochdale

A suspected grenade was found in a canal in Rochdale.

Police were called to the water off Smith Bridge Road at around 10.40am on Sunday.

The item was found by a member of the public.

A Royal Logistic Corps bomb disposal unit was sent to the scene.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "Police were called at around 10.40am this morning to a report of a suspected grenade found by a member of the public in the canal of Smithy Bridge Road in Littleborough.

"Officers are at the scene and a section of the canal has been cordoned off as a precaution while enquiries are carried out."
