'Suspected gas leak' sparks major evacuation at Pontins Brean Sands

A huge emergency response was launched following a suspected gas leak at Pontins Brean Sands.

Police, fire and ambulance crews descended on the venue, near Burnham-on-Sea, at around 7:23pm today (Tuesday).

Scores of holidaymakers were forced to wait on the roadside while the entire park was closed down.

A spokeswoman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said the authority was called following reports of a suspected gas leak.

Officers investigated the scene and confirmed it was a false alarm.

She said: “It came in as a suspected gas leak but nothing was found, it was a false alarm.”

A spokeswoman for South Western Ambulance Service said paramedics attempted to treat two people at the scene.

One person refused help, while the other is currently being assessed by crews.

“It could be too early to say but it doesn’t look like they’ll be needing hospital treatment,” said the spokeswoman.

“We sent our HART team, an officer, an ambulance and a rapid response team.”

Customers re-entered the venue around 8:45pm.
