Suspected firearms discovered in abandoned van in Rochdale

Suspected firearms have been discovered inside an abandoned van in Rochdale.

Police and forensic officers were seen on Suffolk Street in Deeplish on Wednesday morning.

Photos shared with the Manchester Evening News by local business Auto Shop show crime scene investigators in white suits searching a blue van parked inside what appears to be some sort of yard.

A spokesman for GMP confirmed a warrant had been executed earlier that morning, and 'items which purported to be potential firearms' had been found.

The suspected weapons were seized and are currently being examined by a specialist team.

GMP said in a statement: "Police responded to community information concerning an abandoned vehicle on Suffolk Street, Rochdale.

"Officers conducted a search of the vehicle and discovered items which purported to be potential firearms.

"The items are currently being assessed by a specialist team.

"There is no threat to the public."
