Suspected drunk driver Esteysi Izazaga drove up to a mile with man's body lodged in windscreen after hit-and-run

A suspected drunk driver struck a pedestrian in Oceanside, California and then kept on driving for up to a mile with the man’s body lodged in her windscreen, police have said. The collision reportedly occurred at around 6.20am on Monday morning, as 29-year-old Esteysi Sanchez Izazaga was returning home from a night out. Witnesses said her vehicle hopped the pavement and hit the man, apparently at random.

The speed of the collision sent the man’s body flying through her windscreen, with his head coming to rest on the front passenger seat. Ms Izazaga continued driving erratically for around a mile before parking in a cul-de-sac close to her home, where police found her an hour later. She was arrested on suspicion of drunk-driving, felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter. She told police she had been drinking in several different bars until the early hours.

Shocked witnesses described the violence of the incident, saying one of the man’s legs had been ripped from his body by the force of the impact and flew through the back window, where it landed on the boot of the car, police told KNSD. Another local news station, KGTV, reported that the victim was a local homeless man in his 60s, who was on his way to or from a nearby soup kitchen. Ms Izazaga is being held on $1.5m bail.
