Suspected drug driver caught after blocking police car in middle of chase

A suspected drug driver was caught after blocking the way of a police car pursuing another vehicle.

Officers came across a vehicle driving in the dark without any lights in Bolton Road, Atherton, overnight.

As police tried to pull it over, another vehicle - a silver Mercedes - failed to stop at the side of the road and blocked the way of police.

When the Mercedes was then followed, it turned on to a cul-de-sac where one of the passengers fled.

A roadside breath test saw the driver of the vehicle test positive for cannabis and cocaine.

A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, possession of a bladed article, failing to stop and possession of drugs.

He remains in custody to be quizzed by police.

In a post on the GMP Leigh, Atherton and Hindley Facebook page, officers said: "Officers from the #TransportUnit attempted to stop a vehicle last night on Bolton Road driving without lights on in the dark.

"Another vehicle as shown in the picture rather than stop to the side of the road so we could get past him in order to stop the original vehicle we had intended to stop decided to fail to stop!

"The vehicle was followed and unfortunately a short while later for the driver came to a cul-de-sac on Chiltern Avenue in which one of the passengers decided to disappear.

"The driver on a road side drug test showed a positive indication of cannabis and cocaine within his system.

"Officers from Leigh’s Neighbourhood Policing Team came to assist with the remaining 2 passengers and driver and a 20 year old male was then arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drugs, possession of a bladed article, failing to stop and possession of drugs.

"He remains in police custody for interview."
