Suspected drug driver arrested after two people 'seriously injured' in crash

A suspected drug driver has been arrested after two people were 'seriously injured' in a crash in Bury.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Walmersley Road at about 8am this morning (Thursday, July 15).

Eyewitnesses said the smash involved two cars and a flat-bed lorry, which was parked at the side of the road.

Firefighters cut free a woman who was trapped in one of the vehicles.

A man and a woman, both in their 40s, were taken to hospital with 'serious injuries'.

Police have arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of driving under the influence of cannabis.

The road - a key link between Bury and Ramsbottom - was closed for several hours between Palatine Drive and Falshaw Drive while emergency services worked at the scene.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing four fire engines and two ambulances along Walmersley Road, as well as a police presence.

An air ambulance was also spotted landing on a park off nearby Palatine Drive.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said she heard 'an enormous crash' outside her home shortly before 8am.

"I was having my breakfast when I heard this almighty bang," she said.

"I thought it was a skip being dropped.

"I ran outside and all the neighbours were outside seeing what had happened.

"It looked really bad. The fire brigade were cutting all the doors off and put a barricade up."

Another resident said he rushed outside after hearing a commotion and saw a man stumble from one of the vehicles.

"I was in the living room and came straight out," he said.

"There was a woman trapped inside her car.

"It's not the first time something like this has happened.

"This road is dangerous. People fly up and down it all the time."
