Suspected drug dealer found in garden after crashing Ford Focus into BMW during police chase

A suspected drug dealer was found in a garden after crashing into another vehicle during a police chase.

Officers later seized a machete and drugs from the suspect's damaged Ford Focus which smashed into a BMW as it was being followed by an ummarked police car in Anfield.

Merseyside Police confirmed officers had tried to stop the man's car during a police crime blitz on Wednesday as they suspected he was involved in Class A drug dealing.

But after failing to stop the car hit a BMW at traffic lights as it headed down Queens Drive towards Utting Avenue.

The wanted man drove off despite the crash but was later found in a garden.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "Another police vehicle attended an address on Craine Close (Anfield) linked to the car where they spotted the driver making off on foot through gardens on Frankby Road.

"Due to the numbers of proactive officers in the area, they were able to work together to locate the man in a garden on Ardrossan Road where he was detained and arrested."

Police said nobody was reported to have been injured in the crash but a paramedic did attend to check the driver and passenger of the BMW.

Inside the car, officers also found a machete placed down the side of the seat and a quantity of Class A drugs and the car were also seized.

The 43-year-old suspect was taken to custody where he was questioned and has since been released under investigation.

The dramatic incident was part what police dubbed "a day of action" in Walton, Kensington, Anfield and Tuebrook aiming to reassure communities and "identify those involved in organised crime, gangs and serious violence".

Police made nine arrests in total, dished out five covid fines and carried out 19 stop searches during the operation.

The day began with four pre-planned warrants taking place on Sheil Road and Rossett Street, both in Tuebrook and Bala Street and Wernbrook Road, both in Anfield.

The warrant on Bala Street was in relation to drugs.

A spokesperson said: "Five people were detained inside the property whilst officers conducted a search where a quantity of crack cocaine, heroin and cannabis was seized.

"One woman admitted to owning the drugs and so a voluntary interview was arranged. In addition to this, a Covid fine was issued to the occupier, a 43 year old man for breaking regulations."

She added: "The warrant on Rossett Street was conducted in relation to gun offences. Unfortunately no items were seized but the occupier did hand over a knife, which had been hidden under a mattress and a gas mask."

A knife hidden under a gas mask was handed to police after a raid in Tuebrook (Merseyside Police)

A teenager was also found with a knife and several drivers were hit with tickets.

Acting Inspector Emma Haffenden said: "It was a busy day yesterday but the end result is something myself and the team are really proud of.

"We conduct these days of action to fundamentally protect the public and take criminals off our streets.”
