Suspected drug dealer caught by police after trying to run away along Metro tracks

A suspected drug dealer was snared by police after trying to escape across Metro tracks.

Shortly before 7.30pm on Tuesday, a Mercedes saloon failed to stop for officers in the Chillingham Road area of Newcastle.

The driver led police on a high speed pursuit before abandoning the vehicle at the Holystone pub and making off on foot in possession of a number of large carrier bags.

The man was later spotted running along railway tracks towards Palmersville Metro Station before he cut through to a near-by housing estate.

After a search of the area officers spotted him jumping over a garden fence and discarding his bags.

The bags were then found to be stuffed with cannabis and cash.

Chief Inspector Sam Rennison, of Northumbria Police’s Operations Department, said: “This was a case of good old-fashioned policing and excellent teamwork from our Operations Department with motor patrols, firearms support officers and our dog unit all working together to track and locate a suspect, as well as a bag full of drugs and cash.

“I would like to thank my staff for their fantastic dedication and quick thinking as they were able to successfully bring the suspect into custody and bring a potentially dangerous incident – an individual on the Metro tracks - to a swift and safe conclusion.”

A 27-year-old man was arrested under suspicion of supplying cannabis, dangerous driving and drug possession. He has since been released under investigation with enquiries ongoing.
