A suspected drink driver "tried to fight everyone who was helping him" following a serious collision that left eight people injured and some trapped.

The PSNI have said that officers from the District Support Team were doing patrols when their "radio came to life" with reports of a serious road traffic collision.

"Whist NIAS and NIFRS done an amazing job with injured casualties we took our drunk driver off to custody via a trip to A+E.

"A massive team effort from all emergency services and a few police departments including DST, local policing teams, Road Policing Unit who finished way beyond their finish time and processing team in Musgrave. It's never safe to drink and drive."

Eight people were reportedly injured and some of them trapped as a result of the crash.

The ambulance and fire service were called to the scene along with the air ambulance and upon arrival found that one of the drivers "wasn't fit to drive".

It also emerged they had already been disqualified from driving and they then attempted to "fight everyone" who was trying to help him at the scene.

The man was arrested and police say that seven hours after the incident he was still found to be twice over the legal limit.

He has since been charged with dangerous driving causing grievous bodily injury and other driving offences and was due to appear in court.
