Suspected drink driver found 'slumped' over wheel 'attempted to drive off' from PSNI

A suspected drink driver has been arrested after reportedly attempting to flee from officers who found him 'slumped over his steering wheel'.

PSNI officers say they received a report of a hit and run collision and follow-up enquiries led them to Moneymore town, Co Derry where they found a motorist slumped over the wheel.

After banging on the windows to wake up the driver, police say he attempted to drive away, almost dragging an officer with him.

Sharing details of the incident on Facebook, a Police Mid Ulster spokesperson said: "Another drink driver taken off the road during the week and it was a particularly tricky one.

"Following being involved in a hit and run collision in Moneymore, this driver left the scene. We located him still in Moneymore town. He was slumped over his steering wheel. Once we'd woken him up by banging on the windows, he looked up and upon seeing us, he attempted to drive off.

"One officer was fortunate not to be dragged along with the car as he did so. Their colleague had to smash the window of the vehicle to prevent the driver from making off and potentially causing further harm.

"The driver was arrested and in custody provided a lower reading of 125 in breath. They have been charged to court for a number of offences.

"It will never be ok to drink and drive. Please don't do it."
