Suspected drink driver flips van over and traps woman underneath by her hand

A woman was left trapped under a van which flipped over when an alleged drink driver tried to turn round on one of Wirral's steepest roads.

The injured pedestrian sustained a severe hand injury this morning and was taken to Aintree Hospital for treatment.

The accident happened at 11am on Egremont promenade, close to The Ferry pub, almost on the busy waterfront.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said the incident occurred during a reversing manoeuvre during which the van hit the pavement, and toppled over.

The woman was hit and became trapped.

The van driver, 65, from, Liverpool, was arrested on suspicion of being unfit to drive through drink or drugs and was taken into custody.

He will be quizzed by police officers.

One witness said: "The van driver was trying to turn down the bottom of the road, but with the road being so steep, the van toppled on its side.

"The fire brigade had to cut someone out, the van appeared to be more like some sort of motorhome."

Firefighters attended the scene, but Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service declined to comment.
