Suspected drink driver escapes police after being arrested

An arrested man managed to escape police after he had been detained on suspicion of drink driving.

Police said they received reports at 1.50pm today of two men "acting suspiciously" in a car in a supermarket car park in West Derby.

After the car was stopped by officers on Deysbrook Lane the passenger fled.

The driver, a 29-year-old man from Wirral, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving but then managed to flee from police.

However, the man's escape attempt was short lived as he was caught a short time later on Allerford Road.

He was further arrested for escaping lawful custody, possession of a controlled drug, resisting arrests and drug driving.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We were called at 1.50pm today to reports of two males acting suspiciously in a car parked in a supermarket car park in West Derby.

"The car was sighted and stopped by officers on Deysbrook Lane.

"The passenger made off and the driver, a 29 year-old man from Wirral, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving before making off.

"He was detained a short time later on Allerford Road and further arrested for escaping lawful custody, possession of a controlled drug, resisting arrest and drug driving."
