Suspected drink-driver arrested after following police helicopter in his convertible

A man curious to witness a police helicopter in action jumped into his car to go and take a look - and ended up being arrested on suspicion of drink driving after being spotted by the helicopter crew.

South Wales Police scrambled the force’s helicopter to deal with a separate incident, which had piqued the driver’s interest.

But the officers spotted the 55-year-old’s erratic driving, on Ystrad Road in Fforestfach, Swansea, from the air, and a colleague was sent to intercept the driver.

He was made to undertake a road side test by officers suspicious that he had been drinking, and he gave a reading of 80 - the legal drink drive limit is 35.

The incident took place on Sunday, May 17.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: “Shortly after midnight, while investigating a separate incident officers sighted a vehicle being driven erratically.

“The vehicle was stopped by officers and the driver, a 55-year-old man from Fforestfach was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

“He was released under investigation”.
