Suspected drink driver almost wiped out petrol station in early morning crash

A driver was arrested after a car crashed into a petrol forecourt at a service station on the M6.

The emergency services were called out to Charnock Richard Services at around 1.20am today ( Friday) following reports of an incident.

A photograph shared by police appeared to show a saloon car which had crashed into the back of a heavy goods vehicle.

The driver was reportedly arrested nearby after a foot chase across fields.

Lancashire Police posted a comment at 1.20am which read: "We are currently dealing with an incident at the Charnock Richard Services on the M6 Southbound.

"The filling station at Charnock Richard Services is being closed for the next few hours.

"We will provide an update once it is reopen. Thank you for your patience."

Just before 6am today the force released a second statement which said a driver had been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after a short chase.

The tweet read: "Drink driver almost wiped out the fuel station south bound on the M6 at Charnock Richard services then ran off, arrested following a foot chase over fields, now in Preston Custody."

The section of motorway between J27 and J28 has not been closed.
