Suspected cop killer Markeith Loyd charged with resisting arrest

ORLANDO, Fla. _ Suspected cop killer Markeith Loyd now faces an additional charge of resisting arrest without violence, court records show.

The charge was filed Tuesday, Orlando police said.

Loyd is already charged with murder in the slayings of his ex-girlfriend Sade Dixon in December and Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton on Jan. 9.

He remained on the loose and a manhunt ensued before Loyd was found Jan. 17 in an abandoned house on Lescot Lane in the Carver Shores neighborhood.

During Loyd's arrest, he was seen throwing two guns out of a bedroom window, including the one he allegedly used to kill Dixon and Clayton, according to an arrest affidavit. He was ordered to crawl on his stomach from the front door to where officers were standing in the street, the affidavit said.

A video from a helicopter showed officers kicking Loyd at least twice before the camera panned away.

Orlando Police Chief John Mina said last week Loyd resisted arrest when he did not put his hands behind his back as ordered. Officers also considered Loyd's violent crime spree and that he appeared to have something in his waistband, which turned out to be a bag of ammunition.

Loyd, 41, was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center where he spent about a day receiving treatment for a fractured bone on his left eye socket, damage to his left eye and other facial injuries. He was then taken to the Orange County Jail where he remains without bond.

Mina said last week a use of force investigation would be opened. A spokeswoman said Tuesday that it remains active.

Loyd has a court hearing scheduled for Thursday.
