Suspected burglar found hiding behind a wheelie bin by police after alleged Costa raid

A suspected burglar accused of raiding a North Tyneside coffee shop was found by police hiding behind a wheelie bin.

Shortly after 4am on Tuesday police received a report of an attempted break in at Costa Coffee on Bedford Street, North Shields.

Witnesses reported seeing a man attempting to break the window and gain entry to the shop before he was scared off by alarms.

Officers arrived on the scene within minutes and began a search of the area soon finding a man cowering behind a wheelie bin.

The 32-year-old was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary and taken into police custody.

Chief Inspector Ron Charlton of Northumbria Police, said: “Our alert cops had had their caffeine this morning and were able to quickly find our hiding suspect.

“We often say that the public are our eyes and ears, and that was the case again this morning.
“Thank you to the members of the public who contacted us quickly and for their detailed description of the suspect.
“I’d like to remind the public to always get in touch if they spot something suspicious or hear an alarm.

“It can be easy to ignore it, or to think someone else will report it, but it is always best to report what you’ve seen as soon as possible.”
