A suspected burglar was arrested after being caught trying to crack open a safe in a Newcastle cafe.
At about 11.15pm on Saturday police received a report that the alarm had been activated at Coffee Trader on Northumberland Street.
When officers arrived they found the glass door of the café had been smashed.
Officers were also stationed at the back door of the premises while their colleagues decided to enter through the smashed entrance.
They carried out a search of the premises and found a man in a back office who appeared to be trying to open a safe.
He made off from police inside the building but ran straight into the waiting arms of the officers positioned at the rear exit.
The suspect was arrested and has since been charged on suspicion of burglary.
Chief Inspector Steve Wykes, of Northumbria Police, said: “This was a fantastic example of teamwork that has resulted in a positive arrest.
“The responding officers have shown great knowledge of the local area and ensured all exits were covered before entering the building.
“They have then carried out a meticulous search of the premises and seemingly caught a suspect in the act of trying to open a safe.
“He has been arrested and that is thanks to the hard work of everyone involved in our response on Saturday.
“I hope this arrest reassures our city centre business community and underlines our commitment to tackling this type of criminality.”
The 50-year-old man has been charged with burglary of a business premises and is due to appear before North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court today (Monday).
