Suspected Banksy appears at Marble Arch after Extinction Rebellion protest

It is yet to be confirmed by the man himself, but a mural which appeared next to the Marble Arch in London following Extinction Rebellion protests is believed to be by Bristol street artist Banksy.

The artwork was sprayed and stencilled onto the wall at Marble Arch around about the time demonstrators gathered to celebrate the closing of their week long occupation and disruption of central London on Thursday.

It shows a child clutching an Extinction Rebellion sign while crouching near a plant shoot emerging from the earth.

"From this moment despair ends and tactics begin," accompanying words say.

While it has not yet been confirmed as the work of Banksy, it does follow his familiar style.

Extinction Rebellion supporter Calvin Benson, 48, from north west London, said: "I wanted to come down to protect this artwork because it needs to be preserved, we've just had an historical event over the past 10 days in London.

"This artwork represents the will of the people that were here and the people of the nation."

When asked how sure he was the painting is one of Banksy's, he said: "One hundred per cent its a Banksy, it's already been confirmed by street artists and the whole community knows about this. Most of them had been down here.

"Read the message, he's a supporter of Extinction Rebellion."

There has been a strong Bristol presence at the Extinction Rebellion protests in London this week - the movement itself began in Stroud and Bristol more than a year ago.

Some of those still camped at Marble Arch last night said it happened between 7.30pm and 10pm, but they did not see anything.

Steve Jones, 53, from Holland Park in west London, said: "I was right under the nose of it all, but I didn't see a single thing. I returned from an Extinction Rebellion meeting and it was there, it just appeared.

"A man we met last night said he had been taking photographs of Banksy's work after it's done, and this ticks all the boxes.

"It shows a message of hope and desire for the future against the tyranny we are held under,” he added.

What Banksy had to say as 'Devolved Parliament' painting goes on display in Bristol

The presence this week in London of Massive Attack’s Rob del Naja, who performed as part of Massive Attack for the Extinction Rebellion crowds is certain to continue to fuel speculation that 3D is also Banksy, a theory which was discounted in Bristol when it surfaced last year.

Banksy normally verifies his work through either his Instagram account or the ‘Pest Control’ website, but the What Banksy had to say as 'Devolved Parliament' painting goes on display in Bristol as of 10.30am this morning (April 26) was the painting “Devolved Parliament”, which was put back on display at Bristol Museum to mark what was supposed to be Brexit Day last month.
