Suspected arson attack at YMCA camp in Newcastle

Police and the Fire Service are investigating a cabin fire at a Newcastle YMCA site after it destroyed in a suspected arson.

About 100 teenagers had to be evacuated from the recreation centre in Co Down.

A fire at the Greenhill YMCA was reported around 7pm on Saturday when a log cabin caught fire.

PSNI Sgt McIlveen said: The fire was at a log cabin, used as a shelter or relaxation-type area.

"Unfortunately the cabin has been completely destroyed by the fire, which is believed to have been started deliberately.

"Thankfully there are no reports of injuries and no damage to the nearby main property."

Greenhill YMCA is a popular learning and recreational centre used all year round.

The police have appealed for information or witnesses to come forward.
